Chapter Two
Myles is a Sydney fund manager at the height of his career and the end of his marriage. He catches the same ferry every morning and reads client files the whole way across, never once looking at the harbour.
Then an old fisherman on the wharf raises his voice, and something gives way. Myles’s heart races, his vision blurs, and his dead father’s face rises up in front of him.
What follows is a year of coming apart. A mother’s death. A sealed envelope holding her testimony. A sister carrying a disclosure she has never been able to say out loud. Myles has to reckon with a history nobody told him and which he has been carrying the whole time regardless.
A novel about inherited grief, the cost of a life built on never stopping, and how much of a person can be dismantled before what remains is finally their own.

Chapter One
The Morning Tensions That Feed His Routines
“I could be home late tonight, Evelyn. First workday of the year, and overseas markets look a bit jittery. I’ll keep you posted.”
Evelyn shouts back through the closed door. “So we won’t be having dinner together. Again?”
“Come on, Evelyn. Big things are happening on the markets. My clients need me. We’ll talk during the day. I need to get going.”
“I may need you too, Myles.”
Myles walks out the door, his mind already focused on his work and the day ahead.
He doesn’t notice the apartment development rising metres from his building, or the old structure it has replaced, where an elderly couple once lived. He doesn’t see the children’s playground nearing completion near the ferry wharf.

Dr David Rosenbaum
A career spent studying how people learn and change, and a first novel that asks the same question of one man.
David is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. The Remaking of Myles is his debut, written over two years alongside his academic work. He is currently writing the sequel.
